As temperatures drop it's time for warm clothes and winter shoes. Our Kids’ Winter Collection offers a wide range of winter shoes and warm clothes designed to keep little ones dry and warm no matter the weather or activity. Get the kids ready for winter with our expert tips and recommendations.

Winter is approaching – and with it, the question many parents ask themselves: How should children be dressed properly in the cold? Should you go for one thick garment, or build up layer by layer? And what about shoes – what actually keeps the warmth in?
"As the innermost layer, wool is one of the best choices you can make. The material naturally regulates temperature – it warms you when you’re cold, but breathes and adapts when you get warm. In addition, wool absorbs moisture without feeling clammy, which is especially important when you sweat during activity," says Silje.
Many children find wool itchy. Our wool underwear has a 2-layer construction – with soft bamboo on the inside and fine, itch-free merino wool on the outside, for comfortable wear all day long.
The mid-layer should insulate without restricting movement. Make sure it’s not too tight – without air between the layers, the insulation is weakened, and the child may quickly get cold.
‘Here it’s wise to choose garments that provide warmth without being stiff, such as fleece or a thin down jacket,’ Silje continues.
The outer layer should block wind, rain, and snow – but at the same time allow excess heat to escape. A durable shell suit made with waterproof materials provides solid protection, so that children can play freely in any weather.
‘The most important thing is that the children stay dry and comfortable. At the same time, the clothes must withstand rough play and be easy to put on and take off,’ says Silje.
Cold toes can quickly ruin the fun, which is why good footwear is especially important throughout the winter season. We recommend that children’s wardrobes include both a pair of waterproof winter boots and a pair of thermal boots, to ensure dry and comfortable feet in any weather. With solid protection, a comfortable fit, and durable soles with good grip on slippery surfaces, the kids are ready for anything!
Our warmest winter shoes for kids feature Solarcore® insulation. Solarcore® is an ultra-thin layer of insulation that activates under pressure, providing a whole new level of warmth without adding extra weight to the shoe. Another favorite is Extreme Warm – the perfect thermal boots for slushy winter weather, keeping feet warm down to –20 °C.
Whichever boots you pick, remember to match them with a nice pair of warm socks. Wool socks are ideal for kids because they naturally regulate temperature, keeping little feet warm in cold weather but preventing overheating when exploring.
"Mittens, hats, and headbands are essential for retaining warmth in exposed areas. Hands and head are often the places where children get cold first. Warm mittens and a beanie that covers the ears will make a big difference", says Silje.
In Viking’s winter collection you will find several options to choose from. Our beanies are crafted from merino wool, with a cotton or fleece lining, making them extra soft and comfortable.

"The most important thing is not how much clothes you put on your children, but how you build up the layers. The layering principle is just as relevant for preschool children as it is for adults on the ski slopes."
