At Viking, we value the long-term relationships we have with our suppliers. The technical competence and craftsmanship required to make Viking shoes are predominantly found throughout Asia and not necessarily in Nordic countries. As of 2020, 77% of our partner collaborations in Asia were over 10-years old, and 33% of our partner collaborations in Asia have been in place for 30 years or longer.
Moving our production to the Nordics would require substantial investments from Viking towards both new facilities and technical expertise that is highly uncommon in Nordic countries today. Additionally, many of the raw materials used to construct our shoes are only available locally in Asia and would otherwise have to be imported into production facilities in the Nordics. These factors significantly contribute towards the final price for our retail partners and customers.
Viking has a long history beginning in 1920 when our founder, Peter Mathias Røwde opened a rubber factory in Askim, Norway. A lot has changed since then, and while we don’t know what the future will look like, for now, we will continue to develop and maintain our longstanding relationships with our manufacturing partners in Asia
Together with our partners, we continuously explore new sustainability projects and options – this includes the use of renewable energy and renewable or recyclable materials in the production of our products.
BRING and DB Schenker are the primary transport companies used by Viking. Both BRING and DB Schenker have and continue to make improvements towards sustainability in the logistics and delivery sector through the utilization of green technology, carbon emissions reduction, and last-mile consolidation.
Our share of airfreight from Asia was 0,41% in 2020; our goal is 0% airfreight.
All Viking products are packed and transported in FSC® certified (Forest Stewardship Council®) cardboard boxes. We will continue to minimize the use of plastic used to transport our products and have removed all unnecessary plastic from the packaging. However, total removal of plastic will result in a significant increase in cardboard volume, which reduces transport efficiency and hence increases emissions.
The purpose of the Transparency Act is to promote companies’ respect for basic human rights and decent working conditions in connection with the production of goods and services. The law shall ensure transparency about supply chains and requires companies such as Viking to carry out and publicly report on our due diligence assessments.
Due diligence assessments mean that we as a company must map, monitor and assess the risk of negative impact on people, animals, society and the environment linked to our business and implement measures where necessary. Upon written request from the public, the law also requires us to provide insight into the due diligence assessments and priorities we have made.
Viking have been a member of Ethical Trade since 2007 and have had open supplier lists since 2016. We carry out annual audits at our first-hand suppliers’ production facilities and have published our due diligence assessments since 2022. You can find an overview of our suppliers and read our due diligence assessments here.
